There is a secret joy that writers occasionally admit to each other, that inflicting tragedy upon characters is really fun. Sometimes a writer will grow too attached to their characters to have anything sad or bad happen to ‘em, but that’s boring. Mental and physical torture is what makes characters real people! Just like us.

Maybe we’re lucky, and Chelsea got most of hers in her backstory. Ditto for Elgie.

I already predicted that every main character is going to die in a big grand finale of blood, bullets and blades. All that matters is how it’s going to happen.

Nah, you see, characters obey the Law of Conservation of Drama. Troughout their whole story all characters feel the same amount of drama. If they live happy lifes all the time then all the time is condensed in one final stupid death. But if they spent all the pain little by little during their lives, they have no more pain when they die.

At least, that’s the usual way things go.

… You enjoyed reading Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilagy didn’t you… You know the series of books where the author goes out of his way to do bad things to the main caracer… for three books solid he doesn’t give the poor kid a single clear cut win.

by the end of the third book the girl he’s in love with ends up married to another guy the entire royal family he was suppost to protect ends up more or less dead and his own powers seem to be killing him by inches

Jack ain’t kidding – I’m a writer myself and I must admit I do love giving my characters a hard time of it. I honestly believe you have to be at least a bit of a bastard to be a good writer – and more than just a little sadistic. After all – if we didn’t torture our characters in such a way, our stories would be boring. You need good conflict to have a good story

This is a brilliant way of handling this, I don’t like sentimentality, and this has a brilliant lack of sentimentality, don’t get me wrong, it’s sad, but it doesn’t dwell upon the fact, nor explain how, why, where etc she was killed… Instead it leaves me (and I hope a lot of other people) with a satisfying ‘…Oh.’

We did in the first mentioning of her, in the Penny Dreadful for Suka. It goes into more detail about Suka’s history, even explaining what her tattoo’s meant, her love interest, her father and more about him, her sister and other fun facts about our favorite grey-haired idi- I mean, Russian!

Actually, I usually kill my main ccharacters and bring them back by magical or wicked means. Buut yes, killing off OCs is pretty darn fun (not sure if I’m allowed to cuss on here). Goddess! Now I have to wait to find out why she has two bullet holes in her! You’re so mean. *Pout* Can’t wait til the next update

No need to worry, you need not kill them to make them real.

In fact, Jack never mentions death in his post, just ‘Mental and physical torture’. Trust me, death is the easiest way out. Living is the real torture.
